A Family Legacy
Serfas Farms traces its roots back to 1952, when Adam and Else Serfas immigrated from Germany to Canada with their children—Agatha, Alfred, and Herb. They arrived under a church sponsorship program, initially working under contract to hoe sugar beets. Before long, Adam began securing his own sugar beet contracts and growing crops independently, marking the beginning of the family’s farming legacy.
By the late 1950s, Adam had purchased his first farm and built a family home. As the operation grew, he became deeply involved in the sugar beet industry and, in the early 1960s, began feeding cattle—laying the foundation for what Serfas Farms would become.
In the mid-1960s, Adam and his son Herb expanded further by purchasing an old feedlot in Turin, referred to as the original Turin feedlot. Around this time, the farm continued to evolve, balancing both crop production and livestock feeding.
Herb married Shirley (Beselt) in 1973, and together they raised four children: Kevin, Mark, Joanne, and David. Just a few years later, 1976 marked a turning point, as it was the final year the family grew sugar beets. From that point on, Herb and Adam focused fully on cattle and feed production, rebuilding and expanding the original Turin feedlot while continuing to farm and grow feed.
In 1978, Herb and Shirley built their family home near what is now the Serfas home lot, where they still reside today. In 1988, the original Turin feedlot was sold, signaling another shift forward for the farm.
By 1991, construction began on what is now known as the Serfas home lot—marking the next chapter in the evolution of the operation and solidifying Serfas Farms as a multi-generational cattle and farming business.
Today, Serfas Farms stands as a testament to hard work, resilience, and family tradition, built from humble beginnings into a lasting agricultural legacy.
